With the rise of social media, however, many people are, for their own purposes, generating exactly this kind of data for us traces of their communicative interactions as they work out their thoughts about matters of common concern. They are doing so on a wide range of subjects, under a wide range of different institutional mechanisms which structure their interactions in many different ways, creating natural sources of variation which the social scientist can try to exploit to learn more about the effects of subject matter, of communicative structure, and of other factors on cultural dynamics, and perhaps ultimately even on innovation and discovery.
